1. Usage (main past tenese)

- short, one-time actions

Francisco me besó.
Recibí una carta de mi hermana.
Jimena abrió la puerta y vio una luz.(finished action after another)
De repente escuchó la voz de Manuel. (sudden, finished action)

- actions in the past with dates (closed past)

Yo caminé por esa calle ayer.
El año pasado llegó una chica nueva a clase.
En este año visitamos tres veces la fábrica.

- pure facts

La organización imprimió las invitaciones para el evento.

- short action interupting long action
- with verbs expressing opinions

Creo que fue un buen año.
La fiesta me pareció muy divertida.

2. Formation

TRABAJAR trabaj-é trabaj-aste trabaj-ó trabaj-amos trabaj-asteis trabaj-aron	COMER com-í com-iste com-ió com-imos com-isteis com-ieron	ESCRIBIR escrib-í escrib-iste escrib-ió escrib-imos escrib-isteis escrib-ieron

"We" have the same form in preterito indefinido as in presente.

3. Exceptions

• -ir for verbs changing their infix in present tense, the change also happens in the 3rd person:
• e->i
• e-> ie  (here only e->i)
• o->ue (here o->u)

other examples: pedir, repetir, servir, divertirse, sentir, morir

• irregular root, but the same suffixes:
  The accept falls on the second to the last syllable (púde, púdo) which is not marked as opposed to regular form where accent falls on the last syllable (trabajé, trabajó)

• poder pud-e pud-iste pud-o pud-imos pud-isteis pud-ieron	andar -> anduv estar -> estuv hay->hubo poner ->pus querer->quis saber -> sup tener -> tuv venir->vin

La semana pasada no fuimos al cine.

4. Vs. other tenses

•  Action (indefinido) vs. background, description (Imperfecto)
• Estaba en la universidad cuando escuché la noticia.
• Finished, repeated action ( Indefinido) vs.  routine, custom (Imprefecto)
• En las vacaciones iba todos los tías a la playa (I used to go there everyday)
• En las vacaciones fui tres veces a la playa (I went there three times)
• Todos los sábados salíamos a bailar (routine - we used to go there)
• Todos los sábados salimos a bailar (repeated action - we were going there)  
• Finished action e.g. beggining or the end (indefinido) vs. description (Imperfecto) 
• Cuando salimos, empezaba a llover. (it was starting to rain - description)
• Cuando salimos, empezó a llover (it started raining - the begging of action)
• El curso terminaba en noviembre. (description -the course was ending...)
• El curso terminó en noviembre. (the end of an action - it ended in...)  
•  Opinions (indefinido) vs. Description (Imperfecto) 
• Cuando estuvimos en Mallorca, hacía mal tiempo. (description)
• Cuando estuvimos en Mallorca, hizo mal tiempo (reflections, opinions)
